Argos Drawers
Assembling Flimsy Drawers form Argos
Many Argos and Homebase wardrobes and chests come with drawers which can only be described as flimsy. The back and sides come as one piece with each side hinged suing the plastic laminate finish. This often tears in transit or when you first lift one piece not realising how fragile it is.
The weakness of this join does not really matter due to the nature of how the drawers fit into the unit but in my opinion I always add a bit of glue to strengthen them.
NB: PVA wood glue takes 24 hours to dry so once assembled do not fill the drawers immediately!
- I lay the side pieces flat and add a thin line of PVA wood glue down each channel. Once dry this will help fix the base of the drawer in place and reduce the likelihood of it "falling through" when heavy things are placed in the drawer.
- I add drops of PVA wood glue to the corners, these will help bond the sides to the back once dry.
- I then add some glue to the channel on the front of the drawer.
- Before constructing the drawer as per the instructions.
This needs to be repeated for all the drawers and the handles added before inserting them into the unit (wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside tbale etc).
When you insert them into the unit, pull the runners our as far as possible and position the drawer in place. Use the grub screws provided to fasten the drawer in place as shown below.

Whether it is a bunk bed or loft bed, it is important to heed the warnings on the instructions. If you do not attach the slats properly to the upper bunk your child can suffer serious injury. The following two things have been identified:-
- The slats must all be fastened down on the top or raised bunk. On a normal bed the slats are often strung together and fastened down at six anchor point. If the slats fall through the bed you only have 12 inches to fall so no issue. If you are on the top bunk, such a fall could cause a serious injury, especially considering the way the slats might move and trap an unlucky child.
- Slat must be placed right up to the head and foot boards on the upper bunk. Again an unlucky child could slip and get trapped in a seriously uncomfortable or fatal position.
The chances of these two things happening are increased during play and therefore it is imperative that bunk beds and loft beds are assembled correctly.
